Customizing ArcIMS—Using .NET Link

 Introduction

The main purpose of ArcIMS is to serve geographic content over the Internet. As such, it is designed to work with various web servers, allowing clients to access and display spatial data in a web browser. A web server communicates with ArcIMS - specifically the ArcIMS Application Server - through a connector. ArcIMS provides several connectors for a variety of development environments:

• Servlet Connector - passes raw ArcXML requests and responses.
• Java Connector - uses Java and a tag library for generating ArcXML requests and responses.
• ActiveX - uses ASP and Visual Basic for generating ArcXML requests and responses.
• ColdFusion - uses the ColdFusion environment and custom tags for generating ArcXML requests and responses.
• .NET Link - If you are creating applications using Microsoft .NET technology, you can use the ArcIMS .NET Link to connect your .NET application to the ArcIMS Application Server. By connecting your .NET application to the Application Server, you connect to all the functionality provided by the Spatial Server through ArcXML.
